Old Amersham and Metro-land

Old Amersham is a conservation area, with timber-framed and Georgian buildings along its High Street and the Market Hall of 1682, listed Grade II*, at its centre. Roofs here are steep and old and repairs need tiles, slate and lead that match what's already there.

The railway arrived in 1892 and Amersham on the Hill grew up around the station as part of Metro-land, with Edwardian and interwar houses full of bays, hips and gables. The town even protects some of its early 20th-century housing: Elm Close, built around 1920 from concrete blocks with cement roof tiles and the Weller Estate are both conservation areas. On the hill above the old town stands High and Over, a modernist house of 1929 listed Grade II*.

Those two halves need different care. In the old town the priority is matching what is already there: old clay tiles, lime bedded ridges and lead that has often been patched over the years. On the hill, the Edwardian and interwar houses are now reaching the age when original tiles, battens and felt come to the end of their life together, which is when a planned reroof is often better value than chasing one leak after another.

Typical roofing jobs in Amersham

Listed buildings and conservation areas

Amersham has several conservation areas, including Old Amersham, Elm Close and the Weller Estate. Buckinghamshire Council deals with consent in all of them. Repairs to slate, tile or lead in matching materials don't normally need permission. Changing the covering on a listed building needs listed building consent and some visible changes in a conservation area need planning permission. If yours might, we can supply the specification and photographs an application needs.

Leadwork in Amersham

Metro-land dormers and Old Amersham lead

Amersham on the Hill grew up after the railway arrived in 1892. Its Edwardian and interwar houses are full of features that need lead: bay roofs, dormers with lead cheeks and tops and valleys where hips and gables meet. On houses of that age the original lead may now be close to a hundred years old.

Old Amersham is different again. Along its High Street, timber-framed and Georgian buildings have steep clay tile and slate roofs with lead soakers, chimney flashings and gutters behind parapets. Repairs there have to match what's already on the roof. On a listed building, consent may be needed too.

Wherever you are in Amersham, you'll get photos of the lead as we find it and updates as the work goes on.

The whole experience with Damien was 5*

Such a great guy who has an amazing team with genuine passion for what they do. The results of our full re-roof and lead work speak for themselves with a constant stream of neighbours in the street acknowledging the quality of workmanship whilst they were here.

Damien’s communication was so appreciated - from the minute we met, talking us through what was needed doing, explaining our options clearly - quoting us fairly, then keeping us updated on plans, juggling really difficult weather conditions without any stress and sending great photo updates throughout the process.

Couldn’t have wished for a better experience.

Thanks Damien, Martin, Sam and the whole team for everything. Absolute legends.

Roofing in Amersham: common questions

Anything else, call Damien on 07803 473995 or send us a photo on WhatsApp.

Do you work on Metro-land houses in Amersham on the Hill?

Yes. Edwardian and interwar houses there have bays, dormers and valleys that rely on lead. We renew failed lead, repair the tiles around it and reroof where the original tiles and battens are worn out.

Can you match old clay tiles on an Old Amersham roof?

Usually. For listed buildings and the conservation area we look for handmade or reclaimed tiles in the right size, colour and camber, so a repair doesn't stand out on the High Street.

Do I need permission for roof work in Amersham?

For like-for-like repairs, usually not. Amersham has several conservation areas, Elm Close and the Weller Estate as well as Old Amersham. Buckinghamshire Council decides consent in all of them and a change of material on a listed building needs listed building consent.
