Flint, brick and clay tile below the Chilterns

Wendover is a historic market town on the edge of the Chilterns National Landscape (formerly the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and its older buildings use the materials of the hills: flint from the chalk, local brick and steep clay tile roofs, with some thatch. Buckinghamshire Council's design guidance links flint from the Chilterns and the country around Wendover with the area's buildings and boundary walls and picks out clay tiles as a feature of roofs across the Vale.

Beyond the historic High Street and conservation area, much of the town is 20th-century and newer housing under concrete and clay tiles. Homes on the higher ground towards the hills take more wind than those in the Vale, which shows up as slipped tiles and loosened ridges after storms.

Conservation area and listed buildings in Wendover

Wendover's historic centre is a conservation area with many listed buildings and Buckinghamshire Council handles consents. Like-for-like repairs generally need no permission, but changing the roof covering on a listed building needs listed building consent and visible changes to conservation area properties may need planning permission. We'll help you work out what applies.

Leadwork in Wendover

Lead against flint and brick

Flint is one of the hardest walls to flash into. Its joints are irregular, so a lead flashing can't simply be tucked into a neat course as it would on a brick terrace. On Wendover's flint and brick cottages the lead usually has to be chased into the brick dressings or the mortar between the flints, then wedged and pointed in lime so the wall can still breathe.

Get it wrong and water finds its way behind the flashing and into the wall, which on an old building can mean damp inside and frost damage to the face of the flint. Sealant and cement fillets are the usual shortcuts we're called to put right.

The higher ground towards the Chilterns adds wind to the mix. Lead that has been dressed loosely or fixed with too few clips can lift in a gale, so we fix every piece to suit how exposed its roof is.

10/10 for my stunning new slate roof. Would highly recommend Damien and his team (Martin) they were professional, knowledgable and delivered a high standard of work. From the initial quote to the finished job communication was fantastic, when the job was completed they were back to finish any snagging and were very respectful of our property. If you’re considering getting a new roof you must speak to Damien first!

Roofing in Wendover: common questions

Anything else, call Damien on 07803 473995 or send us a photo on WhatsApp.

Can you match old clay tiles on a Wendover cottage?

Usually, yes. Many clay plain tiles are still made in traditional colours and for older or handmade tiles we source reclaimed matches so repairs blend in.

Should flint and brick buildings be pointed in lime mortar?

In most cases, yes. Lime is softer and more breathable than cement, so moisture can escape without damaging the brick or flint. We use lime where the building calls for it, including when pointing leadwork into older walls.

Do I need consent for roof work in Wendover?

Like-for-like repairs usually don't need consent. Changing materials on a listed building does and some visible changes in the conservation area need planning permission from Buckinghamshire Council.

Why does the flashing leak on my flint cottage?

Because flint joints are irregular, flashings on flint walls are often sealed with mastic or cement instead of being chased in. Both crack in time. We chase new lead into sound joints or the brick dressings and point it in lime.
