An old market town at the end of the line
Chesham's Old Town has been a conservation area since 1970, with timber-framed and Georgian buildings at the heart of the town. Its historic buildings include the church of St Mary, listed Grade I and The Bury, a large house built in 1712.
The railway reached Chesham in 1889 and the station building is itself listed Grade II. Victorian terraces from around that time are often roofed in slate, with lead valleys, bay roofs and tall chimney stacks, while the 20th-century estates on the hills around the centre are mostly concrete tile with flat roofed garages and extensions.
Because so much of Chesham is built on slopes, roofs and gutters here deal with a lot of water arriving fast. Downpipes and gutters on hillside houses are worth checking before winter and a blocked or undersized gutter on a slate roof can soak a wall for months before anyone notices damp inside.
Common roofing jobs in Chesham
- Slipped slates on Victorian terraces where the original nails have corroded.
- Lead valleys and bay roofs on period houses.
- Chimney leadwork and repointing on older stacks.
- Flat roof replacement on garages and extensions.
- Gutters and fascias on hillside homes that take heavy run-off.
Old Town, listed buildings and consent
The Old Town has been a conservation area since 1970 and Buckinghamshire Council looks after consent there and for the town's listed buildings. On a listed building, any change of roof material needs listed building consent. In the conservation area some visible changes, such as a new dormer, may need planning permission. Straight repairs in matching materials normally don't. We'll tell you if yours might.
Leadwork in Chesham
Slate, lead and shared stacks in the Chess valley
Even Chesham's oldest building relies on lead. Historic England's listing for St Mary's Church, listed Grade I, describes its roofs as slate and lead, the same two materials that keep many of the town's Victorian terraces dry.
On those terraces the lead is in the valleys between front and back slopes, the small roofs over bay windows and the flashings around tall chimney stacks shared between neighbours. A shared stack means shared lead: a failed back gutter on one side can let water into the house next door, so it's worth both neighbours seeing the photos before any work is agreed.
Up on the hillside estates the bigger issue is run-off. Heavy rain comes off steep roofs fast, so valleys, flashings and gutters need to be sized and fixed to cope with it.

Roofing in Chesham: common questions
Anything else, call Damien on 07803 473995 or send us a photo on WhatsApp.
Who is responsible for the lead on a shared chimney stack?
It depends on your deeds, but a stack shared between two houses is often the joint responsibility of both owners. We can photograph the whole stack so both of you can see what needs doing before work is agreed.
Do you repair slate roofs on Chesham's Victorian terraces?
Yes. Slipped slates, failed nails, lead valleys and chimney flashings on period terraces are everyday work for us. Where a roof is past repairing we'll show you the photos and quote for a reroof.
Do I need permission for roof work in Chesham Old Town?
Straight repairs in matching materials normally don't. Because the Old Town is a conservation area, visible changes there may need planning permission from Buckinghamshire Council and a change of material on a listed building needs listed building consent.
Do you cover the villages around Chesham?
Yes, including Chesham Bois, Ley Hill, Botley, Ashley Green and Chartridge.
