A slate town with a Rothschild story

Tring's character owes a great deal to the Rothschilds. Lionel de Rothschild bought the Tring Park estate in 1872 for his eldest son Nathaniel, who was made the first Lord Rothschild in 1885. His son Walter's collection became the Natural History Museum at Tring.

Dacorum Borough Council's conservation area appraisal for Tring, published in 2019, records that slate is used almost everywhere for roofing in the western part of the conservation area and has survived well. Victorian terraces, with lead-lined valleys, bay roofs and shared chimneys, make up much of the town's older housing, alongside newer estates under concrete tile.

Typical roofing jobs in Tring

Tring is covered by Dacorum Borough Council

As Tring is in Hertfordshire, listed building consent and planning are handled by Dacorum Borough Council. Like-for-like slate repairs generally need no consent, but replacing natural slate with a different material on a listed building may, as may visible changes in the conservation area. The 2019 appraisal is the document the council's conservation officers work from and we'll help you meet it.

Leadwork in Tring

Rothschild cottages and Victorian slate

Nathaniel de Rothschild had scores of cottages built in Tring and the villages nearby for his estate workers, designed by the architect William Huckvale in a recognisable Old English style. The family also gave the town 50 cottages that became Tring's first council houses. Buildings of that era tend to have decorative chimneys, dormers and bays, each with its own lead flashings, aprons and small roofs.

In the western part of the conservation area, where slate is used almost everywhere, the lead to watch is in the valleys, the bay roofs and the back gutters behind chimney stacks. Those are the places where water collects and where old lead splits first. We renew them in lead dressed by hand and refix the slates around them to match.

Tring is in Dacorum, so where a listed building is involved the details go to Dacorum Borough Council's conservation officers. We can provide the photographs and specification they ask for.

Roofing in Tring: common questions

Anything else, call Damien on 07803 473995 or send us a photo on WhatsApp.

Do you work in Tring even though it's in Hertfordshire?

Yes. Tring is about seven miles from Aylesbury along the A41 and we cover it for repairs, reroofs, leadwork and emergencies.

Should I repair or replace my slate roof in Tring?

If slates are slipping here and there, repair makes sense. If nails have corroded across the roof and slates are slipping faster than they can be refixed, a reroof is usually better value. We'll show you photographs of what we find.

Who handles planning for roof work in Tring?

Dacorum Borough Council. Like-for-like repairs usually need no consent, but changes of material on listed buildings or visible changes in the conservation area may.

Can you match Welsh slate on a Victorian house?

Yes. We use new Welsh slate or good reclaimed slate to match and can advise on quality Spanish slate where budget matters and the setting allows.
