A Georgian town rebuilt after the fire
On 15 March 1725 a fire swept through Buckingham and destroyed around 138 houses. The town was rebuilt in the Georgian style and buildings such as the Old Gaol of 1748 and the Town Hall of 1783 come from the years that followed. The centre has been a conservation area since 1971.
Georgian buildings bring their own roofing details: parapets with lead lined gutters behind them, valleys between roof slopes, dormers and tall chimney stacks. Beyond the centre, Buckingham has grown with 20th-century estates and newer developments, where concrete tiles, dry-fix ridges and flat roofed extensions are the norm.
Lead lined parapet and box gutters are the weak point on many of these buildings. Water sits in them, leaves and moss block the outlets and old lead splits where it has been laid in lengths that were too long. Relining them properly, in the right code of lead with the right falls, is specialist leadwork and the reason Leadworx is in our name.
Typical roofing jobs in Buckingham
- Parapet and box gutters behind Georgian frontages, where water sits and old lead splits.
- Like-for-like slate and clay tile repairs in the conservation area.
- Chimney leadwork and repointing on tall stacks.
- Dry verge caps and ridge fixings on newer estates after storms.
- Flat roofs on extensions, garages and dormers.
Planning in Buckingham
Buckingham's centre has been a conservation area since 1971 and Buckinghamshire Council handles consents there. Like-for-like work to parapet gutters, slate and tile is normally a repair. A change of roof covering on one of the town's listed Georgian buildings needs listed building consent and some visible changes in the conservation area need planning permission. We'll check with you before any materials are ordered.
Leadwork in Buckingham
Behind the Georgian parapets
When Buckingham was rebuilt in the Georgian style after the fire of 1725, many buildings were given fronts that rise above the roof as parapets. Behind them sit lead lined parapet and box gutters, often running the full width of the building to a single outlet or hopper.
These gutters are out of sight from the street and easy to forget until they overflow. Lead in a gutter needs drips every few metres so each length can expand and contract; without them it cracks. Water then pools in the crack and soaks into the timbers below.
We open up parapet gutters, check the boarding and the falls, then renew the lead in sensible lengths with drips, outlets and overflows. In the conservation area, slate and clay tile disturbed around the gutter go back like for like.

Roofing in Buckingham: common questions
Anything else, call Damien on 07803 473995 or send us a photo on WhatsApp.
Why does water come through the ceiling below a parapet?
Usually because the lead gutter behind the parapet has split or its outlet has blocked. Water pools and finds its way into the timbers and the room below. We open the gutter up, photograph it and renew the lead with proper drips and outlets.
Do you repair lead parapet gutters on Georgian buildings?
Yes. Parapet and box gutters are specialist leadwork and we do it in house, bossed, welded and dressed by hand to the right falls and sizes.
Do I need permission for roof work in Buckingham town centre?
Repairs in matching slate, tile and lead are normally fine without consent. Buckinghamshire Council decides on listed building consent for the town's listed Georgian buildings and on visible changes in the conservation area.
Do you cover the newer estates in Buckingham?
Yes. We repair dry verges, ridges, flashings and flat roofs on the town's newer homes as well as the leadwork in the Georgian centre.
