Rothschild cottages, a medieval church and new streets

Sir Anthony de Rothschild bought the Aston Clinton estate in the mid-19th century and shaped much of the village around it, adding workers' cottages, schools and Anthony Hall, which his widow later gave to the community. Aston Clinton House itself has gone (its grounds are now Green Park), but many of the estate buildings remain. Period buildings like these often have tall chimneys, bay roofs and detailed leadwork that need a specialist's eye.

The oldest building in the village is the 13th-century church of St Michael and All Angels. Around the historic core, Aston Clinton has grown considerably and newer homes now make up a large share of its roofs, with modern interlocking tiles and dry-fix systems.

Typical roofing jobs in Aston Clinton

Period properties and permissions

Aston Clinton falls within Buckinghamshire Council. Some of the village's older buildings are listed and changing roof materials on a listed building needs listed building consent, while like-for-like repairs usually don't. We match slate, clay tile and lead to the original and will advise before any work that might need consent.

Leadwork in Aston Clinton

Rothschild estate buildings and their leadwork

The estate buildings that survive from the Rothschild era, from workers' cottages to Anthony Hall, were built with the kind of details that keep a leadworker busy: tall chimneys with lead aprons and back gutters, bay windows with dressed lead roofs and valleys where one slope meets another. After more than a century and a half, the original lead on buildings like these may already have been replaced at least once. Not every replacement was done well.

The faults we find on roofs of that age are familiar. Lead laid in pieces that are too long splits as it expands and contracts. Flashings fixed with nails or sealant instead of being wedged into the joints pull away. Bay roofs patched with bitumen paint trap water underneath. We renew them in lead bossed and dressed by hand to the right size and code.

On the village's newer homes the lead is mostly in flashings to porches, dormers and chimneys and the same standards apply.

From the initial quote to the finished job communication was fantastic, when the job was completed they were back to finish any snagging and were very respectful of our property. If you’re considering getting a new roof you must speak to Damien first!
