A market town below a 190-foot spire

Leighton Buzzard's skyline is dominated by All Saints Church, a Grade I listed medieval church whose tower and broach spire, built around 1290, rise more than 190 feet. Around it, the town centre conservation area is mostly Victorian and Edwardian brick, with Welsh slate and clay tile roofs, lead bays and valleys and rows of chimneys.

Linslade (across the Grand Union Canal) and the town's large post-war and modern estates are mostly concrete tile, with flat-roofed garages, porches and extensions. Leighton Buzzard is in Bedfordshire, so planning is handled by Central Bedfordshire Council.

Typical roofing jobs in Leighton Buzzard

Planning is handled by Central Bedfordshire Council

Leighton Buzzard and Linslade fall under Central Bedfordshire Council for planning and listed building consent. Like-for-like repairs usually need no consent. A change of roof material on a listed building or a visible change in the town centre conservation area may need permission. We'll advise you before any materials are ordered.

Leadwork in Leighton Buzzard

Bays, valleys and chimneys on Victorian brick

The Victorian and Edwardian streets around the town centre are full of details that need lead: bay windows with their own small roofs, valleys between front and back slopes and long rows of chimney stacks, each with an apron, step flashings and a back gutter. Most of that lead is now a century old or more. Much of it has been patched.

Lead bay roofs are one of our specialities. We take off the tired lead, check and repair the timber beneath, then boss new lead to the shape of the bay by hand, with rolls and laps that let it move without splitting. On a chimney we renew the whole set of flashings together, so the stack is watertight on every side.

In Linslade and on the newer estates the lead is mostly in flashings to porches, dormers and extensions. Those get the same care.

Roofing in Leighton Buzzard: common questions

Anything else, call Damien on 07803 473995 or send us a photo on WhatsApp.

Do you cover Leighton Buzzard even though it's in Bedfordshire?

Yes. Leighton Buzzard is about nine miles from Aylesbury along the A418 and we cover it and Linslade for repairs, reroofs, leadwork and emergencies.

Who handles planning for roof work in Leighton Buzzard?

Central Bedfordshire Council, for Leighton Buzzard and Linslade alike. Repairs in matching materials normally need nothing from them. A change of roof material on a listed building needs listed building consent and a visible change in the town centre conservation area may need planning permission.

Can you repair lead bay roofs on Victorian houses?

Yes. Lead bay roofs are one of our specialities. We repair or renew them in the right code of lead, bossed to shape by hand, so the bay over your front window stays dry for decades rather than a few winters.

Do you work in Linslade too?

Yes. Linslade and Leighton Buzzard share a town council and we cover both sides of the canal for repairs, reroofs and leadwork.
